Abstract
1452885 Regenerating pickle waste by electrodialysis; electro-depositing iron. LICENCIA TALALMANYOKAT ERTEKESITO VALLALAT 4 March 1975 8940/75 Heading C7B In the cyclic processing of pickle waste liquors containing a maximum 100g H 2 SO 4 and minimum 25g Fe<SP>++</SP> ions per litre, combined with the pickling of iron, by electro-chemical decomposition of FeSO 4 and electrodialytic separation of the acid and SO 4 components of the liquor, the ammonium, Mg or alkali metal (e.g. Na and/or K) sulphate concentration of the liquor is adjusted to 0À5-1À0 mol/l by introducing an appropriate ammonium, Mg or alkali metal salt, the acid content of the liquor is reduced to a maximum of 100g H 2 SO 4 /1, and the liquor is fed into and passed through first the cathode chambers of serially connected dual chamber diaphragm cells to reduce the Fe<SP>++</SP> content to 7-15g/l, then the anode chambers of the cells parallel with and in the same direction as the flow in the cathode chambers, the current density and temperature being maintained at 15-22 A/dm<SP>2</SP> and 70-90‹C. In the first cells, mallable Fe is electro-deposited on to Fe sheet cathodes which are occasionally replaced by new Fe sheets; in the last cells where the Fe<SP>++</SP> content of the catholyte drops below 25g/l, Fe powder is electro-deposited on to cathodes of Al, graphite or Pb. Na 2 SO 4 and/or K 2 SO 4 , as HSO 4 <SP>-</SP> producing additive, is preferably maintained in the steepers. Anodes may be of Pb sheet containing 1% Ag. The diaphragm is preferably a woven polyester or polypropylene web.
