Abstract

1452419 Heat-treating steel wire STAHLWERKE PEINE-SALZGITTER AG 11 Sept 1974 [11 Sept 1973] 39556/74 Headings C7A and C7N Steel wire is produced with a pearlitic core and a surface layer of fully tempered martensite occupying not more than 33% of the cross-sectional area. Preferably the core contains not more than 1% of ferrite. The structure may be obtained by adjusting the temperature of the wire leaving the hot-rolling mill to 850-910‹C, and then water-cooling it in a multi-stage operation to below the martensite start temperature within 0À2 second, followed by coiling and cooling in the atmosphere. In a particular embodiment a steel containing in percentage by weight;- leaves the rolling mill with a surface temperature of 860‹C and is cooled to a coiling temperature of 500‹C in 0.2 sees.
