Abstract

1452088 Hydrocarbon conversion catalysts; dehydrating gas mixtures UNION OIL CO OF CALIFORNIA 14 Nov 1973 52920/73 Headings B1E and B1L [Also in Divisions Cl and C5] Acid-catalysed hydrocarbon conversions, eg cracking, hydrocracking, isomerisation of nparaffins to isoparaffins, isomerisation of alkyl aromatics and alkylation, are carried out in the presence of a catalyst which is a Y zeolite obtained by calcining an ammonium sodium Y zeolite containing 0.6-5 wt.% of sodium as Na 2 O at 600‹-1650‹F in the presence of at least 0.2 psi of water vapour for a time sufficient to reduce the unit cell size to 24.40-24.64Š, and subjecting the calcined zeolite to ammonium ion exchange to leave less than 1% by wt. of Na 2 O; mixed with at least one of Al 2 O 3 , SiO 2 , MgO, TiO 2 , ZrO 2 , ThO 2 , BeO, Cr 2 O 3 and clays, granulated if desired, and calcined at 600‹-1500‹F to effect deammoniation but not to reduce the unit cell size below 24.40Š; a hydrogenation component may also be present, eg a Group VIA and/or Group VIII metal and/or oxides or sulphides thereof, eg Fe, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, W and Mo, possibly with others such as Re. The zeolites produced as above, after drying, are of use as dehydrating agents for gaseous mixtures, eg those containing ammonia or volatile amines.
