Abstract

1450982 Precipitating heavy metals STORA KOPPARBERGS BERGSLAGS AB 5 Feb 1974 [21 Feb 1973] 05713/74 Heading C1A Heavy metals are precipitated, in a form suitable for use as alloying additives in metal smelting furnaces, out of an acidic aqueous solution containing sulphuric acid and more than 2 g./l. heavy metal, by the steps of: at 30- 90‹ C., adding alkali metal hydroxide to bring the pH up to about 8, while stirring the solution; adding a calciferous or siliceous filter aid that is insoluble at that pH and is suitable for use as an additive for metal smelting; filtering the resultant slurry; and washing and drying the filter cake. Where the acidic aqueous solution contains fluoride ions, as a preliminary step, a quantity of calcium ions stoichiometrically equivalent to the fluoride ion content may be added, while maintaining the pH no greater than 4, so that calcium fluoride is precipitated during the subsequent raising of the pH to about 8. The heavy metals exemplified include iron, chromium and nickel.
