Abstract
1449541 Welding by fusion SIGMA LUTIN NARODNI PODNIK 2 Jan 1974 00038/74 Heading B3R In seam arc-welding together longitudinal gap edges 41, (42) of a pre-rolled substantially tubular workpiece, the latter, provided with longitudinally aligned end recesses 43, 44 remote from the gap, is slipped over mandrel 10 until the recess 43 engages a fixed downwardly projecting mandrel pin 13 and the recess 44 is engaged by an initially depressed, spring returned, downwardly projecting mandrel pin 14, the mandrel is positioned between opened jaws 20, 21, the latter are closed to grip the workpiece to press the edges 41, (42) together and into contact with the mandrel, and the welding is effected along the seam by a welding head 57. The jaws 20, 21 are provided with spring- loaded pads 26, 27, for initial engagement of the workpiece, and are tiltably mounted, at 51, and supported, by springs 22, 23, on radially inwardly movable plungers 53. The mandrel has a handle 18, an electrically conductive, e.g. copper, backing plate 15 defining an electrode co-operating with the welding head, and flats 16, 17 facilitating removal of the workpiece from the mandrel. A pin 12 angularly locates the mandrel with respect to a holder 55 which for angular and axial location thereof co-operates with fixed key and abutment members 56A, 65.
