Abstract
1449233 Fuel cell EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 31 Oct 1973 50551/73 Heading H1B A fuel cell for operation with a carbonaceous fuel such as methanol or with hydrogen has as oxygen electrode catalyst a transistion metal oxide of the metal Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co or Ni, and its electrolyte comprises an aqueous buffer solution of pH in the range 7-10. The preferred buffer solution is a mixture of potassium carbonate and potassium bicarbonate. The preferred oxygen electrode is made by mixing carbon powder impregnated with the transition metal oxide with P.T.F.E. to form a paste which applied under heat and pressure to a tantalum screen. The fuel electrode is similarly made but has nickel boride as catalyst.
