Abstract
1449197 Sulphur dioxide FRIEDRICH UNDE GmbH 22 Nov 1973 [23 Nov 1972] 54155/73 Heading C1A Sulphur dioxide is manufactured by the combustion of sulphur in the presence of oxygen or a free-oxygen-bearing gas, the oxygen being present in the proportion required for substantially complete conversion of the sulphur to sulphur dioxide, the combustion being carried out under a pressure of at least 3 atmospheres gauge, and heat liberated in the combustion being dissipated partly in the reaction zone and partly in a zone downstream thereof. Preferably, the temperature of the SO 2 -bearing gas is reduced by this dissipation of heat to that appropriate for the subsequent catalytic conversion of the sulphur dioxide to sulphur trioxide. The process may be carried out in an elongate pressure vessel having a burner at one end and surrounded by a heat-exchanger comprising a plurality of tubes arranged axially with respect to the pressure chamber; the cooling agent in these tubes preferably flows co-currently with the gas in the pressure vessel.
