1448823 Method of protecting pipe joints BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 12 Dec 1973 [6 Nov 1972 17 Nov 1972] 51037/72 and 53092/72 Heading F2G The joint 5 between weight, e.g. cement, coated steel pipes 1, 2 is protected by a method which comprises coating the pipes around the joint area with a layer 6 of anti-corrosion material, e.g. bitumen, unsaturated polyester resin or glass fibre filled unsaturatedpolyester resin; covering the layer 6 with a membrane 7, e.g. of polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride flexible sheet; surrounding the joint with a tubular 8, 9 of plastics material, e.g. high density polyethylene so forming a cavity between the pipes, the ends of their weight coatings 3, 4 and the cover and introducing into the cavity through apertures 17, 18 in the cover an unsaturated polyester resin based material which is then allowed to set. The tubular cover may be longitudinally divided into two or more sections adapted to co-operate with one another and to be fitted around the pipes where they are fixed together by, e.g. external strapping 10. The cover may be spaced away from the pipes by distance pieces 11, 12, 13, 14, 15 provided with pathways through them or by internal ribs on the cover made to form a helical passage between the pipes and the cover to allow the resin to easily fill the whole of the cavity. The unsaturated polyester based material may comprise an unsaturated polyester, an ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable therewith, e.g. styrene, a free radical vinyl polymerization catalyst and a mineral filler, e.g. particulate silica. The resin to filler weight ratio may be between 1 : 7 to 1 : 15.
