Abstract
1448386 Transferring toner images XEROX CORP 24 May 1974 [29 May 1973 5 June 1973] 23248/74 Heading B6C [Also in Divisions G2-G3] In an electrostatographic apparatus of the kind in which a toner image is transferred from a photoconductor 11 to a paper sheet 16 using a bias roller 15 with a conductive backing roll 12, Fig. 3, the roller 15 comprises an electrically conductive core 22 and a compressible body 21 of foraminous open cell material which is highly compressed in the nip area 17. The body 21 may have a liquid-impervious coating 20 on its outer surface, in which case its open cells may be filled with a resistive liquid instead of air. The torque applied by the drive for the roller 15 is set to produce a bulge in the body 21 in the region of the pre-nip gap W to suppress corona generation in said gap W, while a controlled corona is generated in the post-nip gap Y to aid retention of the transferred toner on the paper 16. Rollers, similarly constructed to the roller 15, may be applied to photoelectrophoretic processes (see Division G2-G3). In another embodiment, Fig. 4, the core 122 of the bias roller 115 is formed of perforated metal and is suction backed over a segment of its rotation, as shown, to hold the paper sheet to the roller in the region of said segment. The foraminous body 121 is provided with a paperregistration lip 127, and is cleaned by a vacuum device 126.
