Abstract

1447880 Orthopaedic traction apparatus Y P C A COTREL 5 Nov 1973 [8 Nov 1972] 51166/73 Heading A5R A device for applying traction to the spinal column of a patient 1 lying on a bed 2 comprises a pair of crossed belts 28 encircling the patient's waist with bearing plates 29 and padding 30, and connected to side straps 31 secured to the foot end of bed 2, and a head band 18 retained by a frontal band 23 and by a chin band 24 and connected via a compensation bar 12 and a strap 10 to a traction counter-weight 13. Strap 10 passes round a pulley 8 rotatably mounted on a telescopic bracket 3 set by screws 4 attached to the bed 2 by a catch 6 and supported on feet 5. A second strap 11 extends from bar 12, passes round a second pulley 9 and is linked via a ring 14 to a strap 15 which passes through the ring and has at each free end a pedal 16 for a patient's foot. Traction is applied to the patient continually by counterweight 13 and may be supplemented by the patient stretching his legs which applies further traction through strap 11.
