Abstract
1447825 Foamed ethylene chlorinated ethylene polymers BASF AG 9 Jan 1974 [10 Jan 1973] 00924/74 Heading C3C Flexible foams are made by heating an expandable mixture comprising a thermoplastic ethylene polymer having an X-ray crystallinity at 25‹ C. of more than 20% by wt., and/or a chlorinated polyethylene having a chlorine content of 10 to 45% by wt., an organic peroxide as cross-linking agent and an expanding agent in a confined gas-tight zone in which there is initially no gas space to an elevated temperature at which the polymer has softened and the expanding agent and the peroxide are decomposed and prior to releasing the excess pressure which was generated in the zone cooling the outer surface of the expandable mixture to such an extent so as to produce a temperature difference of 10- 100‹ C. between the maximum temperature within the expandable mixture and its outer surface. In the examples mixtures of polyethylene, an ethylene/n-butyl acrylate or propylene copolymer, or chlorinated polyethylene; 1,3 - bis - (t - butylperoxyisopropyl)benzene or dicumyl peroxide and azodicarbonamide; and talc, zinc stearate, lead stearate, lead sulphate, cadmium sulphide, and/or triallyl cyanurate are made in the form of crepes or granules which are then used to fill a hole in a press which is closed under pressure, the mixture is heated, the press is then cooled (with cooling water) before releasing the pressure and thereby form a foam. The foams may be used as interior trim for cars, inserts in life jackets and for upholstery.
