Abstract

1447779 Balancing reciprocating piston machines, lubricating IC engines NORTON VILLIERS TRIUMPH Ltd 1 Oct 1974 [3 Oct 1973] 46272/73 Headings F1A, F1B and F1M In a reciprocating piston machine as shown an I.C. engine, having three cylinders arranged in a common plane, a pair of pistons 12, 13 are arranged on coaxial crank-pins 9, 11, and a third is arranged on a crank-pin 10 diametrically opposed to the crank-pins 9, 11, a balancing weight 19 being arranged to reciprocate in a guide-member 18 and being connected to a crank-pin, as shown crankpin 10, diametrically opposed to crank-pins, 9, 11. By varying the ratio of the length of the connecting rod 20 of the balance weight to the crank throw, the weight 19 may cancel out the primary and secondary unbalancing forces. The guide-member 18 may be formed in a casting 21 which also forms the oil pump housing 22, or it may be formed directly in the crank-case casting. Again, Figs. 4 to 8 (not shown), the balance weight may be formed with a transverse bore (34) containing a double acting plunger (35) co-operating with two inlets (42), (43) and two outlets (41), (44), in the guidemember, to act as a lubrication pump. The plunger is reciprocated by an extension (37) on the connecting rod (33) rocking about a gudgeon point (38).
