Abstract

1447404 Blast furnace operation HB CLAFLIN 22nd Sept 1973 44574/73 Heading C7D A blast furnace is operated with an oxygen enriched blast introduced through the normal tuyeres while through two vertically spaced sets of auxiliary tuyeres located above the latter there is introduced an auxiliary reducing gas obtained by feeding a mixture of air, oxygen and uncleaned blast furnace top gas into a separate conversion furnace where it is combusted with carbonaceous fuel, the product being mixed with blast furnace top gas for temperature control before introduction to the blast furnace. The flow of gas to the uppermost set of tuyeres is so controlled that the temperature of the adjacent solid charge is maintained below 1000‹C. In a modification an uncleaned uncooled exhaust gas from a basic oxygen converter is also mixed with the gas stream before introduction to the conversion furnace, while only roll scale may be charged to the top of the latter. As illustrated, mixed gases are introduced into conversion furnace 31 through tuyeres 38 and react with a bed of coal, the resultant reducing gas being withdrawn through manifold 33 and passed to the auxiliary tuyeres 46, 47 of blast furnace 45. Top gas leaving the conversion furnace is recycled to the tuyeres of the latter while metal and slag resulting from the dust content of the gases fed to that furnace are tapped periodically.
