Abstract

1447368 Endoprosthetic ankle joints NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 4 Feb 1974 [9 Feb 1973] 6507/73 Heading A5R An endoprosthetic ankle joint comprises a plastics tibial component 30 and a metallic talar component 40 in the form of square and rectangular platforms respectively, the components having complementary respectively concave and convex open ended cylindrical or part-barrel shaped bearing surfaces 32, 42, with the surface 42 extending further transversely to the axis of revolution than surface 32, the other major faces of the components 30, 40 being relieved by studs 34, 44 and bores 35, 45 to provide a key for acrylic cement. In a second embodiment (Figures 1-6, not shown) metallic tibial and plastics talar components both comprise square platforms and the relieved faces are provided with upstanding square subsidiary platforms having undercut edges. The range of angular movement of the joint may be from 50‹ to 70‹. In another embodiment the bearing surfaces are no longer cylindrical but have complementary curvature in their axial directions to provide enhanced lateral stability. Additional malleolar component(s) may be provided for location between the talar component and the tibial medial malleolus or fibular lateral malleolus.
