Abstract
1446044 Automatic control of temperature HENSBY INVESTMENTS PTY Ltd 14 Sept 1973 [24 Nov 1972] 43270/73 Heading G3R An electric soldering iron includes an electric heating element and a resistive temperature sensing element both wound around a barrel and an automatic temperature control circuit which may be contained within the iron handle. In Fig. 1, the heater element 8 and SCR 9 are connected across an A.C. supply. The sensor 11 and a desired temperature setting resistor 12 form a voltage divider arranged to trigger the SCR 9 when the sensed temperature falls below a predetermined value. A capacitor 18 causes the divider current to lead the supply voltage S whereby the SCR will conduct when the voltage across it is relatively low - thereby to minimize radio inter- ference. Diodes 16, 17 provide ambient temperature compensation. In another embodiment Fig. 3 the sensor and setting resistor are connected in a bridge circuit. A diode 24 balances bias voltage inherent in the SCR. A diode 23 balances the effect on the bridge of the diode 24. Diodes 24 and 26 limit current through the sensor 11 when SCR 9 is ON.
