Abstract
1445888 Cooling electric cables KABELUND LACKDRAHTFABRIKEN GmbH 26 Oct 1973 [27 Oct 1972] 50033/73 Heading F4U [Also in Divisions H1 and H2] In a cable installation a conductor 1 has a longitudinal channel la through which coolant, such as water, may be passed in contact with the conductor. The coolant, at the same potential as the cable conductor, passes through heat exchange and pumping means, 8 and 7 respectively which are insulated from earth by the insulating supports 9, 9a, 9b and the insulating shaft 12. The heat exchanger 8 is provided with a blower 10 which is at earth potential. Return of the coolant to the pump may be by means of a second length of cable, Fig. 2 (not shown). Alternatively the longitudinal channel may be subdivided as shown in Fig. 3, for example, in which channels 20 provide for the flow and channels 21 for the return of the coolant. Such a cable may have heat exchange and pumping means coupled between flow and return channels at each end of the cable as in Fig. 4 (not shown). In a modification of the above system blower 10 may be driven through insulated shafts or the like or through transformers having windings insulated from one another for high tension use; the pump 7 may also be driven through a transformer. Measuring and control devices which are at high tension, e.g. in the flow path of the coolant, may be connected by radio or optical means to switch gear which is at earth potential.
