Abstract

1445577 Rolling mills HITACHI Ltd 7 Aug 1973 37447/73 Heading B3M A rolling mill, Fig. 1, with rolls arranged in a 20-high cluster has the rolls supported in two inner housings 5 and 6 located adjustably within an outer fixed housing 7. The intermediate rolls 3A and 3B, Fig. 3, are driven, and the outer rolls 4A and 4B comprise eccentrically mounted casters which are adjustable to provide crown control. Screwdown or wedge assemblies 8, and hydraulic rams or screw assemblies 9, enable the housings 5 and 6 to be moved vertically to give gap and pass-line adjustment. Guide plates 20 and 20A hold the housings in their adjusted positions. Hinged covers 19 and 50 provide end bearings for the supporting and work rolls. An automatic gauge control system, Fig. 11, can be applied to each of the rams 9 and 9A at opposite sides of a plate being rolled. The systems control the plate thickness by adjusting the rams in response to the measured plate thickness and the pressure in the rams. A synchronizing cylinder arrangement (Fig. 12, not shown) is used to reset the roll gap following a roll changing operation.
