Abstract

1444745 Two-part electrical connector AKZONA Inc 23 Oct 1973 [6 Nov 1972] 49390/73 Heading H2E An electrical connector comprises a plug shell 14 bearing a rotatable coupling nut 24 screwed to receptacle shell 12 with annular projection 50 extending radially outward and interceptable by blockable ball 48 to prevent relative motion of the shells 12, 14, while spring 40 is deformed resiliently due to nut 24 moving longitudinally relative to shell 14 until ball 48 moves into grooves 60 or 61 in control ring 58 inside nut 24 allowing it to pass projection when nut 24 is in a predetermined position with respect to the shell 14 releasing spring 40 to urge relative motion of the shells. Projection 50 has an annular lip making an obtuse angle with shoulders 52, 54 and adjacent to wide groove 56. Aperture 46 in ball carrier 16 is big enough to receive ball 48, but too small for it to pass through. When threaded rings 32 and 42 abut washer 36, spring 40 is uncompressed against washer 38 and longitudinal movement of the nut with respect to the shell 12 causes its compression when ball 48 is stopped by projection 50. Control ring 58 can move longitudinally and is disposed between snap ring 62 and shoulder 64. Carrier 16 is secured by its flange 18 between the outer part of shell 14 and flange 20. A plurality of balls may be used. Ball 48 may be replaced by enlargement(s) on flexible longitudinal arm(s) of a cylindrical part of member 16. Each shell 12, 14 supports internally an insert bearing electrical contacts and the shells may have keys and keyways to ensure correct alignment.
