Abstract
1444367 Electrolytic zinc recovery ECOLOGICAL ENG Ltd 29 Jan 1974 [10 Feb 1973] 6643/73 Heading C7B Zinc is recovered as powdered metal from viscose rayon plant effluent, e.g. acid spinning baths, stretching baths and washing liquors, by electrolysis using a rotating cathode. The effluent may contain 0.1-1wt. per cent of Zu, and may be adjusted to between pH4-7 by adding e.g. NaOH on a buffer such as Na acetate. A diaphragm cell may be used with an ion-exchange membrane. A cathode of Al or stainless steel is preferred with an anode of Pt, or a stainless steel tube through which a cooling fluid circulates. Current densities of 0.001 to 0.5 A/cm<SP>2</SP> are specified. If a diaphragm cell is used, H 2 SO 4 is recovered in the anolyte which may be used to redissolve the zinc for further viscose production.
