Abstract
1443265 Drying coatings W SPENGLER 17 April 1974 [18 April 1973] 16693/74 Heading F4G [Also in Division H5] Apparatus for drying wet coatings on a printed sheet 5 comprises a drying device 7,8,9,10 having a plurality of first electrodes 25, 26, 27, 28 in the form of interconnected elongated spaced parallel rods each surrounded by an electrically insulating sheath, a plurality of second electrodes 45, extending perpendicularly to the first electrodes and arranged in rows between and equidistant from adjacent pairs of the first electrodes, each second electrode being in the form of a spike with its tip in the same plane as the first electrodes, and an H.T. generator for maintaining in use a voltage between the first and second electrodes so that a corona discharge occurs between them and passes through the wet coating to heat and dry it. Tubes of vitreous silica can be used as the insulating sheaths of the first electrodes which may be connected in series or parallel. The second electrodes are located on metal bars 38, 39, 40 fixed in grooves in the base plate 37 which are filled with an insulating compound 46. Each drying device is positioned after a corresponding printing cylinder 13, 23, 33, 43.
