Abstract

1443033 Making microwave components; jointing TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc 10 Aug 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 37995/73 Headings B3A and B3V Metal surfaces on microwave components are bonded together in an evacuated enclosure by an adhesive cured by heat to obtain a low impedance path between the surfaces. Parts of waveguides, microwave cavities or (as shown) a disc antenna 10, Fig. 1, may be bonded together. The antenna has aluminium or other metal back and front plates 12, 22 or at least one of the plates may be of dielectric material with a metal surface 24. The surface 24 or both opposed surfaces are primed and a layer of thermosetthermoplastic polyamide-epoxy adhesive 34, Fig. 2, is tacked on the surface 24 with a hot iron 40. A paper backing 36 is removed from the adhesive before the parts are aligned by pins (42), Fig. 3 (not shown), and placed beneath a nylon diaphragm 46, Fig. 4, enclosing a space which is evacuated through a hose 48 to apply atmospheric pressure to the assembly. The assembly is now placed in an oven and heated to 350Œ10‹ F. in 30 minutes, this temperature being held for one hour before being allowed to cool to 100‹ F. and the vacuum released. Alternatively, the adhesive may be applied by spraying or roller-coating.
