Abstract
1443004 Electro-photographic element; printing plate manufacture FUJI PHOTO FILM CO Ltd 15 May 1973 [15 May 1972] 23176/73 Headings G2C and G2H An electro-photographic recording element for use in the production of a printing plate comprises a support and a photo-conductive layer which has or is coated with a surface layer consisting only of a silicone rubber and having no photo-conductive substance uncovered. In the embodiments the support is conductively coated paper, grained aluminium treated with a silicate and coated with a styrene-alkyd resin or a polyester sheet coated with aluminium. Many other supports are also specified. The photo-conductive layer may be ZnO or polyvinylanthracene in a silicone rubber or a styrene-alkyd resin or polyvinylcarbazole and may be overcoated with a layer of silicone rubber optionally containing photo-conductive ZnO. A photo-conductive layer of graded composition may be made by coating a dispersion of ZnO in a silicone rubber on a support and allowing the ZnO particles to settle prior to curing the rubber. The various layers forming the recording element may be joined by an adhesive layer of a silicone rubber or a styrenated-alkyd resin. Many other photo-conductors and binders therefor are specified. The silicone rubber is preferably a one-part siloxane with terminal alcohol or oxime groups and may contain silica or a phthalocyanine as a filler. After exposure and development the element is suitable for use as a printing plate without the need for a fountain solution since the non-image areas are highly ink repellant. These areas may be enhanced further by treating them with an organic or inorganic acid to remove the photo-conductive substance from below the surface of the element. Many acids are specified and acetic acid is used to remove ZnO. Specification 1146618 is referred to.
