Abstract
1442998 Field emission ion sources UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 23 Jan 1974 [24 Jan 1973] 3655/73 Heading H1D A field emission ion source comprises an array of emitting pointers 2, a reservoir for a liquid source material, which can be an alkali metal, e.g. casium, such as an absorbent metal disc 26 impregnated with the material, and a plurality of capillary feed channels, in this case formed by the interstices between wires 3, for supplying the source material to the points. In another form a razor blade is etched to provide both the points and the channels. Heating means may be provided to maintain the source material in a liquid state. The ion source may be used in space propulsion.
