Abstract

1442968 Injection moulding STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 29 April 1975 17744/75 Heading B5A An injection moulding device, e.g. for jointing or repairing an electric cable comprises a mould block la, 1b having a cavity 3, one or more removable inserts 4 defining the mould profile for receiving the electric cable, a heater (23 ... 26) for heating the mould block and insert, at least two injectors 11 mounted on the mould block for injecting plastics material into two diametrically opposed ports (7) in the insert, and means (28, 29) for cooling opposite end portions of the insert. As shown, injection is effected through a slot 18 by means of a pre-loaded spring 16 acting through a piston 14 on a rodlike charge (not shown), e.g. of polyethylene inserted into the injector tube 12. Injection takes place automatically as soon as the mould reaches a predetermined temperature. The device can be used for joining cables of different sizes or for joining one cable to two or more smaller cables, appropriate inserts being provided for these purposes. When the mould block parts la, 1b are separated after use, the pistons 14 acts as ejectors for extracting the remaining charge.
