The pedals, which are fitted with toeclips o, are alternately raised and lowered, and drive by means of straps, chains, or the like p two ratchet-wheels q<1> idly mounted on the spindle j of the rear wheel i. A spring-controlled pawl r, mounted on the wheel i, transmits the rotation of the ratchet q<1> to the driving-wheel. A coiled spring s, Fig. 4, causes the strap &c. p to be re-wound on the barrel part q of the ratchet-wheel at the end of each downward stroke of the pedals.
