Abstract

1441486 Flow restrictors for irrigation systems D O OLSON 4 June 1974 [5 July 1973] 24788/74 Heading AID [Also in Division G3] A flow restrictor for irrigation systems, comprising inner and outer sleeves 16, 14, Fig. 2, defining a restricting passageway 20 therebetween, e.g. of helical form, has means 60 for snap-on connection of the restrictor to a conduit 12 of a system. The means includes an inlet in the form of a barbed hollow spigot 24 which is pressed through a hole in the conduit to provide fluid communication between the interior of the conduit and restrictor, and flexible arms 62 which grip around the conduit to hold the restrictor in place. Overlap between sleeves 32 and 16 creates flow reversal which prevents the entrance of clogging material into the passageway 20. In use the restrictor is buried with only the tip 50 of an outlet extension 44 protruding above the ground. The tip 50 has a cover 52 arranged to provide sufficient clearance 54 for outlet flow whilst minimizing the entry of dust into the restrictor. Alternatively, the cover may be provided with one, two or four lateral outlets, Figs. 1 and 5 to 8 (not shown), for extension hoses. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the integral extension 44 is replaced by a hose (70) fitted to the top of sleeve 14 and cut to any appropriate length before fitting the outlet cap. After removal of the cap from the restrictor, the inner sleeve 16 can be pushed downwardly by a rod to increase the cross-section of passageway 20 for flushing dirt therefrom, whereafter the sleeve 16 is returned by the hydraulic pressure of the system. The restrictor may be of polypropylene.
