Abstract
1440980 Fluid heaters; boilers/water heaters; burners STAV PRAHA VYROBNI STAVEBNI BRUZSTVO STREDISKO MONTA 8 Aug 1973 [14 Aug 1972] 37686/73 Headings F4S F4A F4B and F4T A fluid heater used for heating air or water comprises a plurality of equally spaced, hollow heat exchange elements 1, 2, 3 concentrically disposed within a bed 14 of particulate material, e.g. zirconium silicate, capable of radiating heat energy. The bed of material is supported on a grate 7 provided with a plurality of circular openings or slots 8. A homogeneous fuel gas/ air mixture is supplied to a casing 9 below the grate 7 through a tangential supply conduit 11, the mixture passing upwardly through the bed wherein flameless surface combustion takes place. The wavelengths of the thermal energy radiated by the bed material are mainly in the range 0À5-6Á. A collecting hood 12 having an outlet duct 13 for the discharge of combustion gases is disposed above the bed. As shown, each heat exchange element 1, 2, 3 comprises a helically wound coil, with said coils 1, 2 and 3 being connected to common supply and discharge pipes 5 and 6 respectively. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) each heat exchange element comprises a pair of corrugated cylindrical members arranged to define transverse ribs of semicircular (Fig. 3) or triangular (Fig. 4) shape extending alternately inwardly and outwardly. In a further embodiment (Fig. 5, not shown) the heat exchange elements are arranged horizontally instead of vertically and each comprise a plurality of individual closely adjoining coils (16) whose inner spaces are at their lowest points connected in parallel to a common supply (17) and at their highest points to a common discharge (18).
