Abstract
1440927 Cutting apparatus A SCHMERMUND 16 Oct 1973 [31 Oct 1972] 50096/72 Heading B4B A device mountable on a packaging machine for wrapping block-like articles in wrappers of material cut from webs, wherein the device comprises means 35, 135 adapted to mount the device on the packaging machine, guide strips 9, 10 and 109, 110 defining first and second feed paths for webs 136 and 137 respectively, a cutter device 2, 3 and 102, 103 in each feed path, each cutter device including a rotatable knife 3, 103 for co-operation with a stationary knife 2, 102 and feed rollers 1 and 101 for each respective web, control means being provided for actuating one set of feed rollers while deactuating the other set. Considering the left-hand feed path, the cutter includes four cutting elements 3 mounted on a roller, the roller being held in the position shown in the cutting elements are clear of the web, by means of a spring-loaded lever 6, 8. A pinion 34 is secured to the cutter roller and meshes with a rack 12 which is actuated by a solenoid M1 against the action of a spring 13, the rack being retained in the loaded position by a spring-loaded pawl 19 engaging a pin 20 fixed to the rack ; the pawl is released by a solenoid M2. A free wheel arrangement (11), Fig. 2 (not shown), is associated with the rack- and-pinion drive. In operation, one web, e.g. 136 is drawn from a supply reel by the feed rollers 1 and further rollers 15 until a predeter mined length has passed the cutter device 2, 3. The solenoid M2 is then energized thereby releasing the pawl 19 so that the rack rises under the action of the spring 13 and rotates the cutter roller to effect a cut. The solenoid M1 is then actuated to return the rack to the loaded position shown in Fig. 1, the free wheel preventing return movement of the cutter roller. The cut piece of web is then transferred by a suction conveyer device 24, 25 to a packaging station. When the web 136 has nearly run out, the feed rollers which are actuated via electromagnetic clutches, are stopped and the feed rollers 101 for the web 137 started, the cutter device 102, 103 then operating as previously described. When applied to an existing packaging machine, the normal cutter device 16, 17 associated therewith may be used to cut either web, the cutters 2, 3 and 102, 103 only being used during a web change operation. The feed rollers may be actuated by a manually-controlled switch or by means which senses when one or the web is approaching its end.
