Abstract

1440909 Infusing GRASSO'S KONINKLIJKE MASCHINEFABRIEKEN NV 20 Sept 1973 [26 Sept 1972] 39403/75 Divided out of 1427414 Heading A4E [Also in Division B 1] Apparatus for the separation and purification of solids from a suspension and for the leaching of solid particles including coffee beans comprises, as shown in Fig. 3 a column 1 closed at one end by a porous plate 70 with one or more holes 71 therein for the supply of a liquid suspension of solid particles, a rotatable scraping knife 14 is disposed within the column and displacable axially thereof for compacting of the solid particles to a bed and for the subsequent mechanical removal of a portion of the compacted bed, a discharge pipe 21 for the progressive removal of successive portions of the bed, a pipe 6 at the opposite end of the column 1 for supplying washing fluid to the bed, and means for driving the rotatable scraping knife 14 so that no rotation takes place during the second part of its compression stroke in which the bed formed during a first part of its compression stroke is compacted between the old bed and the porous plate 70. Washing liquid can be introduced through pipe 17 and returned to the circuit via pipe 21 and controlled by photo-electric cell 60 and associated controls.
