Abstract

1440803 Heating IC engines J EBERSPACHER 26 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 30389/73 Heading FIB [Also in Division F4] In an air heating installation for an I.C. engine vehicle and comprising a housing 1 enclosing a first heat exchanger 6 supplied with hot combustion gases from a burner 4 and a second heat exchanger 3 connected to the I.C. engine 2 through lines 11, 14, 15 containing an electrically driven centrifugal pump 12 and a shut-off valve 13, fresh air entering the housing through an intake 7 is passed by means of a fan 8 through the two heat exchangers 6 and 3 to thereafter enter the vehicle interior by way of air ducts 10. During engine start up the heated fresh air leaving exchanger 6 serves to heat coolant water in heat exchanger 3, which water is then pumped through the I.C. engine 2 to raise the engine temperature. When the engine has reached its normal operating temperature the pump 12 is rendered inoperative and engine coolant passing through the exchanger 3 serves to additionally heat the fresh air passing into the vehicle interior. The pump 12 comprises a central inlet 21, a tangential outlet 22, and a three or four blade impeller 19. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1369469.
