Abstract

1439610 Soldering D Q ENG CO Ltd 20 Aug 1973 [15 Dec 1972] 57951/72 Heading B3R A soldering iron bit has a shank which comprises a cylindrical end portion 4 with a bevelled surface 5 extending from one side thereof and a depression 6 on the opposite side thereof, the surface 5 and a surface 7 of the depression defining opposed faces of a tip portion 9. The tip portion is angled relative to the axis of the end portion and has a thickness which progressively decreases towards the free end of the tip portion. The bit is suitable for soldering telephone and electrical relay tags and may have a cylindrical shank of constant diameter or of two cylindrical portions of different diameters, the portion held by the iron being larger or smaller than the other. The bit may be cast or moulded and subjected to a finishing operation or the bevel may be machined before or after the depression is machined. In an embodiment the bit 1 has a shank comprising a smaller portion 4 and a larger portion 2 with the portion 4 bevelled at 5 at an angle of about 30 degrees to the axis XX. A curved portion 6 is machined into the portion 4 forming two opposed portions 7, 8. The bit is made from high purity copper, is completely covered with electrochemically deposited iron alloy and all but the face 5 is covered with hard chromium. The portion 2 is solid and is fitted into the heating chamber of an iron or may be hollow to receive the chamber.
