1439462 Brightening teeth J M HALSTEAD (W A Drucker) 12 June 1973 [24 Aug 1972] 39601/72 Heading A5B Compositions for use in brightening the teeth comprise an aqueous solution buffered to pH 8 to 12 of an N-chloroamine (except N-monochloroglycine) reaction product of (i) at least one hypochlorite selected from alkali metal and alkaline earth metal hypochlorites e.g. having the formula MClO and/or M<2>Cl(ClO) and/or M<2>(ClO)2 where M is selected from Li, Na, K, Rb or Cs, and where M<2> is Ca, Sr or Ba; and (ii) a non-toxic watersoluble aminocarboxylic acid, aminosulphonic acid, alkanolamine or urea e.g. taurine, sulphamic acid, 2-aminoethanol, sarcosine, N- acetylglycine, alpha-aminoisobutyric acid and ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. The solution may be obtained (i) by mixing an aqueous solution of the amine reactant with the hypochlorite or (ii) by adding a pre-prepared N- chloroamine to water. The solution may be obtained by dissolving in water a first tablet containing the hypochlorite and a second tablet containing the amine reactant and buffer, at least one of the tablets optionally including an effervescent material such as adipic acid and sodium bicarbonate. The molar ratio of amine to hypochlorite anion may be at least 1:2 and the concentration of hypochlorite anion is preferably 0.05 to 6% by weight. The composition may be in paste form and include a thickener such as SiO3 and the N-chloro amine in the solution may have a half-life of 3 to 60 minutes.
