Abstract
1439348 Gas operated automatic firearms FRANCE ARMED FORCES MINISTER OF 9 Oct 1973 [10 Oct 1972] 47173/73 Heading F3C An actuating member 7 embracing a longitudinally movable breech block 1 of an automatic firearm has a chamber having a slider 13 movable rearwardly by a movable unit 10 of a gas-actuated mechanism upon firing to first move the actuating member relative to the breech block to allow a retractable bolt 5 to be moved from a position locking the block in a casing 2 in the firing position to a released position, and then move the block to an inoperative position, the slider comprising a longitudinally extending portion projecting forwardly at an outer periphery of the actuating member and having a forwardly facing stop surface for movable unit engagement, a rearwardly facing abutment surface for engaging a wall of the chamber to move the actuating member, and a transversely extending portion projecting towards the breech block at an inner periphery of the actuating member and having forwardly of the abutment surface a rearwaidly facing surface 13c for engagement with a complementary surface E1 on the block. During the firing of a shot the breech block 1 is held by two pivotable retractable bolts 5 engaging the breech casing 2 and kept in position by tabs 7a of the actuating member 7; recoil gases from firing act on pistons of two movable units 10 which move the member 7 via respective rectangular cross-section sliders 13 over a great enough distance relative to the block 1 to release the bolts 5. Frusto-conical shoulders E2 of the units 10 then retract the bolts 5 via push rods 15 and simultaneously the surfaces 13c of respective sliders 13 abut respective faces E1 of the block 1 to withdraw the block. Subsequently, the member 7 abuts the breech block 1 with reduced impact since both are moving rearwardly. The member 7 has two return springs 3, and a stack of frusto-conical washers 4 cushion the recoil of the block 1. For rearming a pyrotechnic charge provides gases to produce a similar sequence of actions. The pistons of the units 10 have leading ends 16 sliding with friction in bores 17 of hollow pistons 10b.
