Abstract

1439317 Fixed bed coal gasification GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 15 March 1974 23040/75 Heading C5E A gas mixture containing combustible components is produced by placing a downwardly moving bed of coal into gas exchange relationship with an upwardly moving gas mixture in a coal gasification apparatus, the initial gaseous input at the bottom of the bed being steam and an oxygen-containing gas, the coal bed containing pieces of extrudate formed by preparing a mixture comprising finely divided coal and binder material outside the apparatus, extruding the mixture as a rod-like extrudate into the interior of the apparatus and breathing the extrudate into pieces within the apparatus. The mixture may be of coal, ash, and a binder such as pitch or tar, which is extruded to form briquettes as in Specification 1,435,090, and the extrusion process can be coupled with a stirred fixed bed gasifier, e.g. using a water cooled stirrer, wherein run-of-mine coal is separated to remove the fibres as in Specification 1,435,089. The pressure in the interior of the gasification apparatus is maintained above ambient pressure. Hollow refractory cylinders as described in Specification 1,435,088, may be present in the gasification apparatus to accommodate swelling of the coal and to add porosity to the bed.
