Abstract
1439133 Isolating chambers DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 13 July 1973 [14 April 1972] 17232/72 Addition to 1225962 Heading C6F The apparatus 1 of Specification No. 1225962, for carrying out processes in a controlled environment, particularly microbiological processes involving highly dangerous pathogenic organisms, is provided with a sealable port 6 in the sterilizing lock 4, which communicates directly with the sterile region of the lock and with a flexible, detachable, tubular connector 3 for joining two apparant uses and for passage of material from one to the other without external contamination. The lock may consist of a trap, as illustrated, containing sterilizing liquid, the sealable port being located below the level of the liquid. The port may extend outwardly and be adapted to receive the tubular connector, which may have a rigidly reinforced central section 8, and may be secured by push-fit or by screw-coupling means. The second apparatus may have a similar lock and the tube may contain sterilizing liquid. In the process described, a microbiological material, produced in the process chamber of the first apparatus, is centrifuged continuously in a Sharples centrifuge 10 housed in the second apparatus and the centrifugate is continuously returned to the transfer chamber 11 of the first apparatus.
