Abstract

1438760 Universal joint B TEMPLE 17 Sept 1973 [17 June 1972] 28471/72 Heading E2F A universal joint comprises a stub shaft 14 whose ball-shaped end is retained by cooperating part-spherical seats in an outer sleeve 10 and a first inner sleeve portion 12 of resilient plastics material, movement of the shaft 14 relative to the sleeve 10 being confined to a single plane by parallel faces 42, 44 on the shaft and a parallel-sided slot 46 in the sleeve, and a second inner sleeve portion, with a portion 18 of reduced diameter extending beyond the outer sleeve 10 and retained by a locking member 24 engaging an annular shoulder 22 thereon. The inner sleeve portions may be integral, Fig. 1, or separate, Fig. 4 (not shown). The resilience of the ball is increased by slot 16 which also cooperates with passages 26, 28 in the shaft and the inner sleeve respectively to provide a path for an electric cable. The looking member 24 carries a tab (32), Fig. 2 (not shown), which engages an abutment 30 on the inner sleeve 12 to prevent full 360‹ rotation, and the member 24 is held against rotation relative to the outer sleeve 10 by a further tab (34). In the embodiment of Fig. 4 such rotation between the separate sleeve portions is prevented by abutments (33), (35) on the respective portions.
