Abstract
1438321 Thermoplastics pipe A G PETZETAKIS 21 June 1973 [21 June 1972] 29551/73 Heading F2P A large bore pipe 1, e.g. for drains, consists of a hollow element 2 of thermoplastic synthetic material, e.g. polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, wound into a helical coil, with the windings 5 touching each other at side surface 8 of the hollow element and being welded at each other by means of a butt weld 6, the free walls 7 of the hollow element forming the inner and outer surfaces of the pipe. The hollow element 2 has a substantially rectangular outside cross section 3 and a rounded inner cross-section 4, e.g. of circular, elliptical or rounded rectangular shape. The pipe is made by extruding the hollow element 2 and winding the extruded element 2 into a helical coil, the windings 5 being welded together by the residual heat from the extrusion process. The construction of the pipe 1 allows it to bend slightly, the free walls 7 of the pipe being defined during bending to avoid damage to the butt weld 6. The free walls 7 are also capable of creep, so that the stresses produced by bending are relaxed after a time. The element 2 may have a covering of a different material (not shown) which covering forms the inner and/or outer surface of the pipe.
