Abstract
1437750 Gasification of coal using molten iron USS ENGS & CONSULTANTS Inc 12 Sept 1974 [12 Sept 1973] 39860/74 Heading C5E Combustible gas is produced by injecting pulverized coal into a first zone of a bath of molten iron containing 1-3% dissolved carbon, thereby increasing the carbon concentration to 3-5%, contacting a second zone of the bath having a carbon concentration of at least 3% with an oxidizing medium selected from oxygen and steam, and collecting a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide therefrom in a volume ratio of hydrogen to carbon monoxide of from 2 : 5 to 10 : 1. The coal is pulverized to an average particle size no greater than 30 mesh (U.S. standard sieve), is dried, and is injected pneumatically at a rate of 2À5-5 pounds coal/ minute/ton of iron in the bath. The first and second zones are separated so that molten iron may circulate from the low carbon zone in which carbon is injected to the high carbon zone in which oxygen and/or steam is injected. The oxidizing medium is injected beneath the surface of the molten iron. Oxygen is injected at a rate of 150-300 scfm./ton or iron in the bath. When the oxidizing medium is steam, the bath is heated by an electric furnace. The gas stream may be converted to high-purity hydrogen by shift conversion with steam and subsequent carbon dioxide scrubbing with monoethanolamine.
