Abstract
1437458 Measuring toxicity using microorganisms BROWN BOVERI & CIE AG 4 May 1973 21398/73 Heading G1B The toxicity of liquids such as water and sewage is continuously determined by measuring the effect of the liquid on the growth of microorganisms, the method comprising maintaining in a stock vessel 1 a constant concentration of a specific micro-organism or mixture of micro-organisms by continuously cultivating the micro-organism(s) under constant conditions in the stock vessel with a constant inflow of water comprising nutrients and an outflow from the stock vessel equal to the total liquid inflow into the stock vessel, passing the outflowing culture solution into a measuring vessel 2 in which the culture solution is mixed for a residence time of less than the period of pro- creation of the micro-organism(s) with the aqueous liquid being tested and with fresh nutrient solution being saturated with atmospheric oxygen and being passed into the measuring vessel at constant rate, and measuring a parameter dependent on the metabolic activity of the micro-organisms. The apparatus shown comprises (a) vessel 1 open to atmosphere, to which vessel are fed concentrated nutrient solution and diluent water, (b) closed vessel 2 provided with overflow pipe 4 and means 5, for example an oxygen electrode for measuring the concentration of oxygen in the test system and (c) vessel 6, which is open to the atmosphere and in which the liquid to be tested is mixed with fresh nutrient solution and the mixture is saturated with air.
