Abstract
1437417 Isotope exchange (D 2 : H 2 ) SULZER BROS Ltd 14 Aug 1973 [16 Aug 1972] 38419/73 Heading C1A A feed flow consisting wholly or partially of hydrogen is charged with deuterium using water of natural deuterium concentration as the deuterium source by transferring deuterium from water to steam in a mixture of steam and hydrogen supplied to a plurality of distillation columns arranged in series in respect of increasing deuterium concentration, the mixture leaving each distillation column being superheated and introduced into a separating stage in which deuterium is transferred from the steam to hydrogen in the mixture and the mixture is cooled by heat exchange with the mixture being supplied to the separating stage: downstream of the final column the steam is condensed out of the mixture and the enriched hydrogen from the mixture is fed to an enrichment process in which the hydrogen is deuteriumdepleted by isotope exchange with a substantially non-aqueous liquid medium containing a hydrogen atom exchangeable with deuterium from gaseous hydrogen, and a steam-hydrogen mixture produced from deuterium-depleted hydrogen from the enrichment process and condensate condensed out downstream of the final column is again supplied to the upstream distillation column. The temperature of the mixture supplied to each separating stage may be between 350‹ and 650‹ C. The non-aqueous liquid medium may be methylamine. Apparatus for carrying out the process is described.
