Abstract
1436313 Measuring fluid pressure in body cavities NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 13 Sept 1973 [13 Sept 1972] 42577/72 Heading A5K [Also in Division G1] To measure pressure in a confined space a remote location e.g. the amniotic fluid pressure in the uterus, a sealed system is used comprising is tube 1 having a flexible sac 2, 3 at each end made of rubber or synthetic film material, the system being filled with a gas, e.g. air, at substantially atmospheric pressure, changes in the pressure on the sac 2 positioned in the confined space being conveyed to the sac 3 whose consequent volume changes are detected, e.g. by a transducer of a pressure gauge (Fig. 6). As shown the gauge may have a spring 20 which is movable in response to volume changes of the sac 3 to vary the air gap in a core 24 and thus change the mutual inductance between two coils mounted around the core. An oscillator (not shown) feeds one of the coils on core 24 and one coil of a compensating core. The other coil on cone 24 and the other coil of the compensator serve as series-connected sensing coils whose outputs are opposed. The sensing coils are connected to a phase sensitive amplifier which also receives a pilot signal from the oscillator. The gauge may be coupled to a pen recorder. Each sac 2, 3 may be detachable from the ends of the tube 1. If a plug and socket connection is used, then pressure within the system can be automatically restored on reconnection. The tube 1 may be made of plastics such as neoprene and the sacs of natural rubber. Alternatively the tube 1 and sacs 2, 3 may be defined between superposed welded sheets of a material such as p.v.c. enclosing a reinforcing tube of P.T.F.E., and in this case several tubes 1 and sacs 2, 3 can be provided side-by-side (Figs. 3 and 4-not shown) each for connection to a respective pressure gauge.
