Abstract

1436060 Ceramic pigments DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER SCHEIDEANSTALT 23 April 1974 [11 May 1973] 17667/74 Heading C1M A ceramic pigment, for colouring ceramic glazes, comprises discrete, homogenously distributed colloidal metal particles of size 0À005-0À1 Ám incorporated into an acid-resistant compound which is stable at the temperatures at which ceramic glazes are fired. The acidresistant compound preferably is of size 1-10 microns. The metal may be Au, Ag, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ir or Pt, or an alloy thereof. The colloidal metal preferably comprises, as an alloy, gold and 1-10%, based on the weight of the gold, of Hg, Cd, Zn, Sn, Ni and/or Pb. The metal content of the pigment is preferably 0À1-3% by weight. The acid-resistant compound may be ZrSiO 4 , SnO 2 , ZrO 2 , Al 2 O 3 , ZnAl 2 O 4 , CeO 2 , CePO 4 , CaSnSiO 5 or spinel (MgAl 2 O 4 ). The pigment may also include LiF or borax. Preferably the colloidal metal particles are formed by pyrolytic decomposition (e.g. at 850-1100‹ C.) of an organic metal resinate, during synthesis or crystal growth, of the acid-resistant compound. Preferably the acid-resistant compound, or its components or precursor(s), is mixed with (e.g.) gold resinate, silver resinate, palladium resinate, AuCN or AgNO 3 , and formed into a paste with water and, optionally, added colophony (rosin), and heated at 850-100‹ C., for example.
