Abstract

1435908 Making clutch components AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 26 Nov 1973 [5 Dec 1972] 56120/72 Heading B3A [Also in Division F2] A reaction member 13 for the diaphragm spring of a friction clutch comprises a metal hoop, formed by bending a metal strip, securing its ends together, e.g. by welding, and deforming one edge to form an inwardly projecting rim 14. In the embodiment shown U-shaped metal strips 15 are welded to the strip to define openings for bolts 16 securing the member 13 to a flywheel 10. The bolt heads are accommodated in gaps 17 cut in the rim 14. Portions of the hoop 13 are deformed, as at 23, to support a presser plate 18 for rotation with, and axial movement relative to, flywheel 10. The hoop 13 may have a radially outwardly directed flange at its edge opposite rim 14 to secure it to the flywheel, rather than the strips 15 shown. Two hoops may be made from a single strip by deforming both edges of a bent metal strip, and splitting this down the middle.
