1435743 Valves APPLICATION DES GAZ 26 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 19981/73 Heading F2V [Also in Division F4] A portable gas burner apparatus, e.g. a pistolgrip type torch 1, Fig. 1, suitable for connection via pipe 3 to a butane or propane gas bottle, comprises a single device for turning the gas on and off and for regulating the pressure of the gas in a chamber 9 and thereby the flow rate of the gas supplied to the burner nozzle 5. The device includes a check valve, e.g. of the automobile inner tube type, having a rod 10 by which the valve closure member is biased to its open position by a force exerted by a loading spring 15, and is allowed to move towards its closed position when the pressure in the chamber 9 acting on diaphragm 11 is sufficient to neutralize the spring force. The latter is adjusted by rotating a cap 14 about a fixed sleeve 12 to cause helical ramps (20, 20a), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), on the cap and engaging arms 21, 21a on a spring-retaining bush 16, to move the bush axially. The ramp surfaces have flats at their angular ends, corresponding to the on and off positions, and may have notches intermediate the flats for position-retaining co-operation with the arms 21, 21a. Screw 29 allows initial calibration of the spring force. In an alternative arrangement, the cap 14 may be adjustably screwed to the sleeve 12 to vary the force of the loading spring.
