Abstract

1435255 Cigarette filter LIGGETT & MYERS INC 23 Aug 1974 [27 Aug 1973 (2)] 37180/74 Heading A2C A cigarette filter comprises a rigid tube 57 located centrally of the filter surrounded by a layer of compacted fibrous filter material 58 which is in turn surrounded by paper 59 which is porous or perforated. The tube is of a plastics material such as polyethylene the filter material is cellulose acetate tow. Apparatus for producing such a filter includes a hollow mandrel 19. A stream of tubing is passed through the interior of the mandrel while filter material is passed into a venturi nozzle 32 surrounding the mandrel. A paper stream 42 is passed onto a conveyor 39. The tube thus emerges from the mandrel 19 surrounded by filter material between a folding block 36 and a tongue 37. The block folds the paper about the tube and filter material. The mandrel 19 is mounted on a block 22 which may be moved horizontally or vertically by respective spring loaded adjustment screws thereby ensuring correct positioning of the. tube.
