Abstract

1434799 Web coating apparatus BELOIT CORP 2 Aug 1973 [25 Sept 1972] 36819/73 Heading D1L [Also in Division B2] In a method for applying glue to the surface of a travelling web 12 from an applicator roller 16 the temperature of the glue on the roller is maintained at not more than 60‹F to facilitate its transfer to the web. The required temperature (e.g. 38-55‹F) is preferably maintained by circulating refrigerant (e.g. cold water) through a coolant passage in the roller 16 from a reservoir 30. In the preferred embodiment the web to be coated is fed via feed rollers 13 to a cutting device 14 where it is cut into wrapper sheets, these sheets being forwarded to wind-up 17 past the roller 16 which is moved to apply glue to the leading and trailing edges only of the sheets. Glue is supplied to the surface of the roller by supply tube 20 having an orifice 21 and fed with glue from reservoir 22 by pump 23. Coolant may be circulated through pipe 26 provided in the reservoir 22 to assist in maintaining the temperature at transfer below 60‹F. The supply tube 20 is moved across the surface of the roller 16 to apply glue thereto only to the width of the sheet to be coated. Light source 25 and photo-detector 28 are provided to regulate automatically the width of the roller to be coated. The preferred glue is one having a viscosity at room temperature of 8000-55000 cps. The use of dextrine is mentioned.
