Abstract

1434524 Stimulating muscles electrically NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 19 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 19583/72 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions H3 and H4] Apparatus for urinary control comprises an implantable circuit 10 for applying stimulating pulses to the sacral ventral roots and an extracorporal circuit 11 for controlling the operation of the implantable circuit 10 in a selective manner the stimulating pulses including a first low amplitude pulse train and a second high amplitude interrupted pulse train. One portion 10A of the circuit 10 provides the low amplitude pulse train with a p.r.f. of 20 ps, by means of a complementary multivibrator 20, an amplifying stage 21, an output stage 22, electrodes 23 and a mercury cell 24. A resistor R2 is chosen so that the pulses of 50 Ásec duration are generated and a potentiometer R3 controls the pulse amplitude and may be adjusted extracorporally using a magnetic coupling. A tuned circuit 25 responds to a transmitter 11A and holds a transistor of the multivibrator off, whereupon a portion 11B of the circuit 10 is energised by a transmitter 11B and produces at the electrodes 23, the high amplitude pulses train of 12 pulses in 1¢ seconds. Component valves of the circuit 10 are listed.
