Abstract

1434311 Two part coupling BUNKER RAMO CORP 27 Sept 1973 [28 Sept 1972] 45211/73 Heading H2E To couple two coaxial cables with small impedance mismatch in the range 0À1-6 GHz, mating connectors on their ends have PTFE insulating inserts making up 60% of axial gap (<¢ inch) between cable dielectrics, with air making 40%. Plug connector 10 has male centre contact 18 with tapered slotted nose entering female centre contact 58 in jack connector 52. Both centre contacts have barbs 49, 74 to prevent backward movement. The outer shell 22 of plug 10 fits over the shell 62 of the jack, with flare and taper to assist entry and two inward springing tines on the jack to ensure contact. PFTE inserts 14, 56 fit in counterbores in shells, staked by four depressions 16, 70, and retain centre contacts. On engagement the rim of jack 62 abuts shoulder 42. Centre conductors may be soldered or crimped into centre contacts before insertion from rear; outer conductors fit over tapered ends of shells 28, 64, with dielectric snugly inside, where crimping ferrules 44, 60 retain them. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 6, not shown) the female centre contact 58 on the jack is slotted and the male centre contact 18 on the plug is tapered but solid.
