Abstract

1434141 Head and chest protector P W BOTHWELL 8 Jan 1975 [5 Jan 1974] 00563/74 Addition to 1320398 Heading A3V A protector, generally as described in specification 1320398, includes a helmet 10 and a rigid outer shell 13 whose neck section 16 has dimension no smaller than the head section 14. The aerodynamic properties of the protector are thereby improved. The helmet is suspended by. cards 18 attached to part of an inertia reel 22 housed in a cavity at the back of the shell: In a crash, sudden movement of the wearers head and helmet locks together to two parts of the reel. The reel may be geared to the piston of a damping cylinder 30. Alternatively the second part of the reel may be fixed and energy absorbed by stretching of the cards
