Abstract
1433943 Recording and playback; mounting flying heads PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 3 Aug 1973 [8 Aug 1972] 36942/73 Heading G5R A flying head 1 is movable in controlled manner relative to its mounting shoe 4 perpendicular to magnetic disc 3, e.g. to/from a projecting operative position or to maintain the head-to-disc spacing constant. As shown, a magnetic head 1 is mounted on a double-layer electrostrictive beam 6 which is secured to the shoe 4 at both ends and which, when energized, bends to advance the head 1 towards the disc 3. The shoe 4 is subject to fluid pressure from cushion 10 and to a bias 5. A sensing device detects changes in the head-to-disc spacing, e.g. by sensing capacitance or fluid pressure, and controls the energizing voltage of the beam 6 (Fig. 3, not shown) to keep the spacing constant. The beam 6 may be of piezo-ceramic material, such as a modified lead zirconate/ titanate, and the shoe 4 may also be ceramic. A thermal or electromagnetic element, electrically controlled, may be used instead of the beam 6.
